13th June 2016 – Market leading POS innovator, Unique Secure and PayPal, the world’s leading open digital payments platform, today announced a joint approval from Transport for London (TfL) to provide a customer payment solution for London’s Black Cabs.
This accreditation has been granted in advance of the 3 October 2016 deadline – by this date all Black Cabs will be required to accept card payments, including contactless. The approved solution combines the PayPal Here Contactless and Chip & PIN device to take payments and the Unique Secure fully lockable, PIN Entry Device (PED) Mount and Harness, to securely hold the PED in the passenger compartment of the Black Cab. Together, the products provide an integrated, chargeable, anti-theft, robust, simple and easily accessible payment option for London’s Black Cab customers. The integrated solution is expected to become available for taxi drivers in June via the PayPal UK website.
David Rimer, CEO of Unique Secure comments, “TfL has been working with industry leading card payment and PED harness suppliers to ensure London’s 22,500 taxis will provide flexible, cashless payment options for customers. We are delighted that our harness, combined with the PayPal Contactless and Chip & PIN device has been approved as a card payment system within the passenger compartment.”
Bas Gevaert, Director, PayPal HERE UK comments, “We are thrilled to have been approved as an official vendor by Transport for London to provide a cashless payment system to London’s black cabs. We have worked closely with Unique Secure to ensure that we are offering the best integrated solution possible for drivers and their customers. PayPal Here, together with Unique Secure, offers a complete end to end Chip & PIN and contactless solution that will allow drivers to take advantage of the huge rise in consumer demand for cashless payment options.”
From October 2016, all taxi drivers must accept contactless, Chip and PIN and magnetic swipe. If a taxi is not fitted with an approved TfL card payment system or is found to have a broken or faulty system, licensing implications will ensue.
